This was great. Reinforces the maxim that societies are rarely conquered by outsiders until they have sufficiently rotted from within.

Thank you for an insightful article.

The Mughal rule in India began when Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526. You mention that Indian trade in Surat declined to almost nothing by 1691, about 165 years later. The reason: religious intolerance. The East India Company moved from trader to ruler between 1600 and 1757. Over the next hundred years, the Crown expelled the EIC from India following the First Indian War of Independence. A major factor was again religion, this time the growing activity of Christian missionaries. It is interesting to observe how invaders in India were removed by their own miscalculations involving their own religion. It is also interesting to note that the East India Company banned European missionaries from its Indian territories until the Charter Act of 1813, which forced the EIC to allow them into India. The rest, as they say, is history.
